Rahul Dravid was born at Indore, Madhya Pradesh on 11th of January 1973. Right-handed batsman and occasional wicketkeeper, he made his test debut against England at Lord's in 1996 and his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka at Singapore in the Singer Cup of 1995-6. He was nominated Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2000.
Dravid has played 86 tests, scoring 7,363 runs at an average of 57.52 with 270 as his highest. He has scored 18 hundreds and has taken 119 catches, mostly in the slips. He has also claimed one test wicket with his off breaks. In 246 one-day internationals, he has scored 7,826 runs at an average of 39.72, with 153 as his highest and 9 hundreds.
A classically stylish batsman who has been nicknamed "The Wall" and "Jammy" by his followers, Dravid has matured into a cricketer who can play a defensive innings when needed and then change gears to play explosive shots when the situation demands it. The cover drive and the pull shot are breathtaking shots that he plays with the consummate ease of a master. A makeshift wicketkeeper in one-dayers to allow an extra batsman into the playing eleven for India, he goes about carrying the extra burden on his shoulders without much ado. Otherwise, one of the best slip fielders ever, he picks up edges as if picking up flowers from a garden.
A soft-spoken man for one so popular, he hates controversies and prefers staying away from the limelight when not on the cricket field. Dravid is polished and brainy and a star amongst stars.
